ch. 8
Two kinds of bitachon: one the world agrees with, and one that is against the sons of men, like one who will not travel far away from Torah and mitzvos though most of his town go and his relatives urge him; great is the good stored away for him
It follows from our words that a person who has some small business should strengthen himself and keep his place, and not wander to faraway lands, and take refuge in the Name of Hashem; and certainly He will send him blessing in the work of his hands, and this is his reward in this world; and all the more so, in the World to Come his reward is very, very great, as it is written, “How great is Your goodness that You have stored away for those who fear You, that You have done for those who take refuge in You, before the sons of men!” (Tehillim 31:20). And the matter is that there are two kinds of bitachon. One is that which the world agrees with: for example, one who works hard at some matter and trusts in Hashem that He will help him in it. And the other is one who strengthens the middah of bitachon further, until it is against the sons of men, as in what the Yerushalmi brings in Sotah, chapter 9, on what is taught in the Mishnah there, “and men of faith ceased,” which I brought in Shemiras HaLashon, Shaar HaTevunah, chapter 10, see there; and for example, one who strengthens himself in his bitachon and does not want to travel to faraway countries, because through this he would come to neglect Torah and mitzvos, even though most of the people of his town travel there, and he has relatives there who urge him to do it. Such bitachon is against the sons of men; and the pasuk says, “How great is His goodness” that is stored away for him in the World to Come for this.
