A hundred blind men, each with his hand on his friend’s shoulder, and one who sees leading them all
So too, a person whose whole living and needs depend on one man should not place the trust of his heart in that man; rather, he should set the root of his trust, from the depth of his heart, in the Creator. It is not enough that he say so while his heart is not with him; rather, he should give praise and thanks to the Creator for not having withheld His kindness from him. Take in hand a fine parable on this. It is like a hundred blind men walking one after another, each with his hand on his friend’s shoulder, and at the head of them all is a man who sees, who leads them all after him. Each one knows that even though he has put his hand on his friend’s shoulder and his friend leads him, this leading does not come from his friend’s strength; they are all drawn after the first man, the one who sees. If he slips away from them, they will all stumble and fall. Let a person take this to heart and think: there is no leader but HaKadosh Baruch Hu, and we are all like the blind, each of us helped and supported by his friend’s help. But his friend has no strength without the Leader above, who gives everything, all of whose ways are upright, and whom one may not question. And just as the one who is supported should think only of HaKadosh Baruch Hu, so the one who supports him should not take pride in supporting him; rather, he is like a blind man leading his blind friend with the help of the first leader, the one who sees.
